I finally got round to tasting a whole bunch of high thujone absinthes: Absinthe 330, King of Spirits Gold, and one called Century Absinth. The last two have 100mg thujone. I have long been sceptical of being told that pre-ban absinthe has no thujone / low thujone by the new manufacturers. I have also been sceptical of the science that popped up at exactly the same time as the new era of absinthes started to appear. So i decided to find out for myself.

Are the secondaries, so well known during the Belle Epoque, all romantic nonsense and a big conspiracy by French wine growers? I don't think so.

Some may say that I was setting myself up for a placebo effect (nobody can deny that the mind is a powerful and little understood source of mischief) I do not think this is the case with thujone in alcohol. It could be a herbal speedball as Ted Breaux has suggested, but I am now coinvinced that high thujone levels do play a significant role. I cannot account for the astonishing secondaries. I also had a HG over the summer with a reputed level of about 50-60mg. This was by far and away my favourite, although the Century came a very close second.

What if Dr Niels Arnold's estimates of 260mg in pre-ban were correct? Seems more and more likely that being told by commercial interests that pre-ban was virtually "thujone free" fits nicely with a now rampant commercial imperative.

Keep an open mind, or better if you can afford it (as these high thujone absinthes are very expensive) open your mind with a glass. But be careful as this is not a sippin' drink for a quiet evening in with the cat and slippers.

Excerpt:

An analysis of century-old bottles of absinthe — the kind once quaffed by the likes of van Gogh and Picasso to enhance their creativity — may end the controversy over what ingredient caused the green liqueur's supposed mind-altering effects.

The culprit seems plain and simple: The century-old absinthe contained about 70 percent alcohol, giving it a 140-proof kick. In comparison, most gins, vodkas and whiskeys are just 80- to 100-proof.

Absinto Camargo

I placed an order through BevMax on Feb. 5, 2008. Two bottles at $24.99 each and $22.58 for shipping made the bill be $72.56.

It arrived today, Feb. 18, 2008, apparently the majority of the delay was due to freezing weather conditions in the northeast. The FedEx route went from Stamford, CT through Elmsford, NY, Keasbey, NJ, North Salt Lake City, UT, Reno, NV and Benicia, CA, before arriving at my house in Lafayette. Interesting to note that the “Adult Signature Required” restriction was not adhered to – the delivery driver set it on the front step and rang the doorbell, then left.

The product arrived intact in a good shipping container.

The Label has some interesting artwork, although the green fairy that is depicted seems to have an Asian look about her. The label states that it is a product of Brazil and that it is 54% alcohol by volume. The back label includes directions and illustrations on how to prepare Absinto, which is a nice touch if you haven’t got a clue about appropriate preparation. It also includes a suggested cocktail recipe.

The cork is interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite like it before. It has a notched wooden cap filled with a composite cork. The cap is tied to the bottle in an effort to keep it from coming loose when it is subjected to tropical heat. The cord that ties the cap on is knotted and the loose ends of the knotted cord are taped down with the bottle’s upper neck-label. It is suggested that you pull the ends of the cord up through the label and then untie the cord in order to free the cork. That’s what I did, and untying the cord is a waste of time; next time, I’m merely going to cut the cord.

The smell of the newly-opened bottle was pleasant.

The color, however, leaves something to be desired. It is almost a pale lime color, when it should be more of a dark emerald color. Once poured into the glass, it appeared almost as if the color was an artificial green, and not the result of natural chlorophylls that had been macerated out of an appropriate herb.

I prepared my first glass by diluting with ice water and two sugar cubes. I was disappointed because the drink did not louche at all.

The taste is mild, and not what I’ve come to expect of an absinthe. In addition, there was no numbing of the tongue and cheeks that one gets with some of the other products.

I will try it again in a less diluted state. Now that I’ve paid more attention to the back label, I see that I’ve diluted it according to my normal preference (1:4) and the suggested dilution is 1:2.

Final Assessment: PASS. I will pour this when I am giving people taste tests, but I prefer the Kubler and the St. George. Even the Lucid is better than this.

No diluting absinthe's lure
Banned no more, drink draws pack of eager buyers in U.S.
By Jane Meredith Adams | Special to the Tribune
December 22, 2007
ALAMEDA, Calif. – Green is the new black. That would be the pearly green of absinthe, the legendary liquor said to have made Vincent Van Gogh decide that cutting off his ear was an idea whose time had come.

Ernest Hemingway called it "liquid alchemy," Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec allegedly carried a supply in a hollow cane and French poet Paul Verlaine cursed it as his ruin. On Friday, for the first time since 1912, U.S.-made absinthe was sold with hopes that it will become the cult drink of the season.

Hundreds dodged work, stood in a long, madness-inducing line and forked over $75 for a bottle of absinthe at St. George Spirits, a boutique firm that is launching a campaign to market the liquor.
Karen Juzefczyk, 49, drove for six hours to get to the distillery, observed a preparation ritual involving the careful introduction of two miniature ice cubes, raised a glass in the St. George Spirits tasting room and took her first sip. The experience reduced her vocabulary to one word: "Wow."

The price tag for the 120-proof spirit shouldn't be an obstacle for Chicago households, which spend more money per year on alcohol than any other city surveyed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. According to the most recent survey, households in Chicago spent $839 per year on alcohol, compared to New York at $488 a year and $757 a year in San Francisco.

If anything, the expensive price is part of the appeal, said David Hanson, professor of sociology emeritus at State University of New York College at Pottsdam and a longtime alcohol researcher. Alcohol consumption is inversely associated with social status, he said. "The lower the social class, the higher the abstention," he said. "Similarly, the more educated people are in the U.S., the more likely they are to drink."

Alleged to have induced feverish creativity in painters such as Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso and Paul Gauguin, absinthe was banned in France and several other countries for nearly 100 years as opponents claimed the drink caused widespread debauchery and delinquency. Some say the ban was the result of a campaign by the French wine industry to discredit the popular drink. The health risks have been debunked, said Hanson, the researcher.

European countries have gradually lifted their bans and in March, the federal government finally agreed to allow absinthe to be sold again in the U.S. Three foreign-made absinthes are already on the market and 20 other brands have asked for permission to sell in the U.S., according to Robert Lehrman, a Washington, D.C., lawyer who worked for four years to get the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to lift the ban.

From the start, devotees have claimed that this is a drink like no other. The green spirit produces an intoxication that is coupled with a caffeine-like alertness, according to imbibers. Robert Jordan, a character in the Hemingway novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls," described the drink as "opaque, bitter, tongue-numbing, brain-warming, stomach-warming, idea-changing liquid alchemy" and carried a flask of it.

"You can drink it and still be lucid," said Chuck Kapelke, 33, of Oakland, who was roughly No. 43 in a 300-plus person line Friday waiting for the 11 a.m. opening sales. "It's almost like a mix of Red Bull and vodka."

The flavor is robust. In the St. George Sprits Absinthe Verte, the sensations include the licorice-taste of anise, a whiff of fresh grass, a touch of citrus and a hint of mint, said Lance Winters, a master distiller at St. George Spirits who created the absinthe. "Absinthe represents the pinnacle of the distiller's art," he said. "You end up with distilled poetry in a glass."

As for Van Gogh's trouble with the stuff, Winters said, "My guess is Van Gogh had some issues before going into the bar." He added, "I've consumed quite a bit of absinthe in my studies and I have both my ears intact."

In the distillery's plant in the vast military hangar on a former Navy base, the St. George Spirits team wore T-shirts proclaiming "Green is the new black" and performed the ritual of preparing absinthe. While other absinthes call for dissolving a sugar cube into the spirit, the St. George Spirit Absinthe Verte preparation involved gently releasing two tiny ice cubes into the dense green liquid, which instantly turned cloudy as essential oils emerged from herbs. Many were the hours that 19th Century poets and artists spent studying the clouds in an absinthe glass in Paris cafes.

Among those imbibing here were Kevin Roche, 47, a research scientist, who is so avid in his devotion to St. George Spirits that he designed a military-style gray uniform with a St. George Spirits Tactical Alcohol Consumption Squad insignia. He and two other squad members were on hand in full regalia. "We're so serious about our drinking we have uniforms for it," said Roche.

Dr. H. Westley Clark, director of the federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, said the introduction of high-alcohol absinthe called for "caveat emptor," let the buyer beware. "You worry about college students," said Clark, who questioned whether some will choose to drink absinthe undiluted. "There are a lot of people who test the edge of the universe."

In the cold Friday, the line snaked through the parking lot and out the gate. One would-be patron read a thriller, another a newspaper, while Brezi Little, 29, bounced her 5-month-old daughter, Emma, in her carrier. Little was on a mission to get a bottle of absinthe as a surprise gift for her husband and, as the carrier of the youngest person in line, was the subject of much ribbing. The absinthe was "just in time for teething," said Little, who noted that a tooth was pushing through Emma's lower left gum.

First in line was Joanne Clapp Fullagar of Alameda, a production editor, who had queued up at 8:30 a.m. "I'm technically working at home," she said. "My boss called and I'm going to buy her a bottle."

I have yet to buy my first bottle of absinth and don't want to waste my money on something I won't like. So far I have only tried a home made version made by a friend, and while I find myself drinking it, it is incredibly bitter. Is all absinth really so bitter?

my name is jonas, people call me xavi or gypsy. I live in an 18 wheeler, but, i don't drive. For some strange reason, i feel priveleged to belong to such a tribe. For a long time, i tought i was the only one around, and the only people i had contact about this, lovely drink, are the people i order it from. Pathetic, i know, but since, i am new to this site, i would appreciate any other introduction, from anybody else in this tribe, to use as my proverbial comfort blanket that i'm not the only one who has the same passions.
